This short piece is take from C. S. Lewis: Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces that shows why C.S. Lewis could make such a logical case for Christianity without hardly even quoting scripture. He uses logic and reason better than anyone ever has. In this piece he uses his expertise as a writer to explain that there is no other writing like the Bible as he dispels those who claim it’s a myth or a legend. (Battlelines)
IN HIS TEENS, C.S. LEWIS WAS A PROFESSED AGNOSTIC. HE WAS INFLUENCED IN HIS CONVERSION TO CHRISTIANITY BY READING G.K. CHESTERTON’S THE EVERLASTING MAN, AND THROUGH THE INFLUENCE OF TWO OF HIS CHRISTIAN FRIENDS. AFTER HIS CONVERSION, HE WROTE A NUMBER OF BOOKS DEFENDING CHRISTIANITY.
DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, IN A FAMOUS BBC RADIO TALK, “MERE CHRISTIANITY,” HE SAID, “I AM TRYING TO PREVENT ANYONE SAYING THE REALLY FOOLISH THING THAT PEOPLE OFTEN SAY ABOUT JESUS: ‘I’M READY TO ACCEPT JESUS AS A GREAT MORAL TEACHER, BUT I DON’T ACCEPT HIS CLAIM TO BE GOD.’ THAT IS THE ONE THING WE MUST NOT SAY. A MAN WHO IS MERELY A MAN AND SAID THE SORT OF THINGS JESUS SAID WOULD NOT BE A GREAT MORAL TEACHER. HE WOULD EITHER BE A LUNATIC, ON THE LEVEL WITH A MAN WHO SAYS HE IS A POACHED EGG, OR ELSE HE WOULD BE THE DEVIL OF HELL. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR CHOICE. EITHER THIS MAN WAS, AND IS, THE SON OF GOD, OR ELSE A MADMAN OR SOMETHING WORSE.”
IF WE ACCEPT JESUS AS A MORAL TEACHER, THEN WE MUST NECESSARILY ACCEPT HIM AS GOD, FOR GREAT MORAL TEACHERS DO NOT TELL LIES. C.S. Lewis
